Travis St Lawrence CE Primary School

Maths Mastery Programme

We joined the Maths Mastery programme in September 2018. We are working in partnership with schools to embed a mastery approach to mathematics teaching. The approach is based on research and internationally recognised practices, and underpinned by key principles. It draws on international evidence, in particular from Singapore and Shanghai, where the high value of mathematics is firmly embedded in the culture and achievement is consistently high.

Our aim is to improve pupils’ understanding, enjoyment and attainment in mathematics. The key principles of Maths Mastery underpin all that we are doing at Travis. We have high expectations for every child. We teach fewer topics in greater depth and we emphasise problem-solving and conceptual understanding.

The programme pulls together many established ideas and methods into one rigorous teaching approach. All children are encouraged to physically represent mathematical concepts. Objects and pictures are used to demonstrate and visualise abstract ideas, alongside numbers and symbols. Mathematical concepts are explored in a variety of representations and problem-solving contexts to give pupils a richer and deeper learning experience.

We now subscribe to Times Table Rock Stars. This is a fantastic online way for the children develop their instant recall of their multiplication and division facts.  Each class from Year 2 to Year 6 will be set a schedule of times tables to work on by their teacher. The site can be accessed by laptop, phones or tablet devises. Please encourage your child/children to use this at home.

Our EYFS and Year 1 pupils have access NumBots. NumBots equips each pupil with the core Maths skills they require. It supports pupils with instant recall of key number facts. They are exposed to a variety of representations and question styles which help build connections between key concepts. Please encourage your child/children to use this at home.
