Year 6

Teachers - Mrs Jenkinson, Miss Markham

Support Staff - Miss Hainsworth, Miss Taylor

Welcome to Year 6!

Miss Markham: Hi everyone! I am one of the current year 6 teachers at Travis and I cannot wait for this year!

Family is really important to me and I love spending time with my two children Ethan and Chelsea and my beautiful granddaughter Harper. I have two dogs: Bella and Lola. I love taking them for long walks; especially on the beach. When I have time I also like to get lost in good book.

Mrs Jenkinson: Hi everyone! I have been teaching at Travis since 2011 and as well as being one of the Y6 teachers, I am also one of two Assistant Head Teachers. I absolutely love teaching especially in year 6. When I am not busy at school, I am at home spending time with my family enjoying watching my little girl grow and learn everyday. I also have two dogs: Coco and Rocco. Our favourite thing to do as a family is travelling in our caravan visiting new places and making new memories. Another of my favourite things is reading; I love getting lost in a new story!

Reading

Please try to read with your child at least three times a week and record your child's reading diary. This can be the school recommended read book or a book from home. It is important to check that, as well as becoming more fluent, the children understand what they are reading, especially as they begin to read longer and more complex books. This can be done by discussing the book afterwards, or during reading. Talk about the characters, setting or main events. Encourage children to develop empathy by focusing on characters' emotions and motivations.

It is important that your child has their reading record in school every day so that adults within school can also record in them. An adult will collect and record the times read each week. Each class has its own system in place to recognise and reward children who read at home with adults.

We encourage a love for reading and aim for our children to be life-long readers. The children are encouraged to read and enjoy the books in our book area within the school day. Children are welcome to bring their own reading book from home as long as it is of an appropriate level for them to read and enjoy independently.

We also celebrate reading through celebrating star readers in our celebration assembly as well as our home reading certificates.

Maths

Maths is fundamental in learning essential skills for everyday life. It helps children think critically and solve problems and understand the world around them. We recognise how strong foundations set the stage for both future academic and personal success.

To ensure that all of our pupils have the opportunities to succeed and develop  both skills and confidence, we practice arithmetic skills daily, reinforce the importance of a strong knowledge of multiplication facts and continue to embed fluency across all areas.

As parents/carers, we welcome your continued support in encouraging your child to access TTRockstars and Reflex/Frax daily where possible. We run in-school and academy-wide competitions regularly awarding children for their success in lots of different ways.

Home Learning

Children will be given weekly maths, spelling and SPaG homework each Friday. This will be a short task for each that we encourage children to complete independently. Early Bird each Friday will be spent marking it and identifying/working through any misconceptions. Each Tuesday lunchtime, we offer a homework club for those who wish to complete it in school. As an incentive to both classes, the class who has the most handed in gets an extra playtime (instead of Daily Mile) that week.

We also have weekly TTRockstars and Reflex competitions/battles that children are encouraged to take part in.

Y6 Residential

During the Autumn term of Year 6, we head off on our 3 day (2 night) residential visit. We use The Oakes as our provider which is an established provider of residential visits based in the outer suburbs of Sheffield. The center closely aligns with our school’s Christian ethos where camps teach a simple gospel message as part of the camp in a fun and interactive way and in a way that respects children from all faith backgrounds. The content is delivered by highly trained, dedicated teaching staff. During the stay, pupils get to take part in a whole host of activities ranging from tunneling, mudder, ropes, Lego, arts and crafts, remote control cars and many more. Children are able to choose their selection of activities when arriving at camp so it really is tailored to everyone's likes and interests. The camp is run by dorm and activity leaders being fully immersed in their group for the duration. They compete against one another collecting individual and team points to try and win Camper of the Day and best overall dorm group.

"I wish we could go to The Oakes everyday - we had the best time!" Year 6 pupil

"My aspiration is to work at The Oakes when I'm older. I want to be there everyday doing what they do." Year 6 pupil
