Year 5

Teachers - Mr Heyes and Mrs Lambert.

Support Staff - Mrs Marley and Mrs Turner.

Mr Heyes: I have been teaching for over 15 years now, spending the majority of my time in UKS2 as well as a brief spell in KS1 which I thoroughly enjoyed. Nearly all of my career has been here at Travis St Lawrence which I am extremely proud of and I feel very much part of the village and the strong, school-community partnerships that we have fostered over the years. I love the daily commitment of shaping futures, sparking creativity and coaching children to become the best versions of themselves. I am passionate about building positive relationships and seeing the immense benefits that arise when pupils are valued and respected. I am a lifelong learner and thrive on the challenge of nurturing curious minds. Alongside teaching, I love languages, art, sport, music, cooking, travel and spending time with my family.

Reading

Reading is at the heart of our school curriculum and underpins most of what we do. Our children take part in daily reading lessons, will read to adults 1-1 and have many fantastic stories read to them, all of which contribute to them improving their reading fluency and comprehension skills. Ultimately though, our aims are to develop children as lifelong readers and allow them to appreciate the incredible benefits that reading brings. We lead busy lives yet taking the time to read with your child at home really boosts their cognitive development, vocabulary, imagination and confidence. Please try to read with your child least three times a week and log your child's reading in their diary. This can one of our 'Y5 Recommend Reads' which cover many important themes and include page-turning classics, both old and new. It is important to check that, as well as becoming more fluent, the children understand what they are reading, especially as they begin to read longer and more complex books. This can be done by discussing the book afterwards, or during reading. Talk about the characters, setting or main events. Encourage children to develop empathy by focusing on characters' emotions and motivations. Children also have access to a wider range of amazing books in our wonderful library where they can select and additional book of their choice to take home alongside their class reading book.

It is important that your child has their reading record in school every day so that adults within school can also record in them. An adult will collect and record the times read each week. Each class has its own system in place to recognise and reward children who read at home with adults.

We celebrate reading daily and every three weeks, we nominate a star reader as part of our celebration assembly.

In our reading lessons, we follow the 'Pathways to Read' scheme that is designed to equip pupils in year 5 with key skills to become competent and fluent readers. The year 5 units provide clear, detailed lesson plans and resources linked to high-quality texts, ensuring engaging and purposeful reading sessions that support our pupils in developing the confidence during comprehension activities and foster a love for reading.

PE

PE days are on Wednesday and Friday. On Wednesday, we have our indoor sessions and on Friday, outdoor sessions.

Outdoor kit: red t-shirt/polo shirt, dark jogging bottoms, a hoody if it's chilly and socks and trainers. Long hair must be tied back for PE and earrings removed.

Maths

Reflex - Pupils now have access to this website which supports their mental multiplication and division skills as well as upskilling their mental addition and subtraction skills.

TTRockstars is a fun away for children consolidate their times tables. Please encourage your child to log in little and often as this will help children become fluent, children will also be given time in class weekly. At the end of Year 4, all children were expected to know and recall all their times tables facts up to 12 x 12. Regular practice, both at home and in school, supports those who are not fully secure. In Year 5, instant recall of times tables is crucial for mastering more complex, fast-paced math like long multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages. It boosts mental arithmetic speed, reduces cognitive load during problem-solving, and builds confidence, preventing pupils from falling behind as they transition to harder topics.

Please see the document below to find out the Maths facts that we will be covering throughout the year.
