Travis St Lawrence CE Primary School

Year 6

Teachers - Mrs Jenkinson, Miss Markham

Support Staff - Miss Hainsworth, Mrs Norton

Welcome to Year 6!

Miss Markham: Hi everyone! I am one of the current year 6 teachers at Travis and I cannot wait for this year!

Family is really important to me and I love spending time with my two children Ethan and Chelsea. I also have two dogs: Bella and Lola. I love taking them for long walks; especially on the beach. When I have time I also like to get lost in good book.

Mrs Jenkinson: Hi everyone! I have been teaching at Travis since 2011 and as well as being one of the Y5/6 teachers, I am also the Assistant Head Teacher. I absolutely love teaching especially in years 5 and 6. When I am not busy at school, I am at home spending time with my family enjoying watching my little girl grow and learn everyday. I also have two dogs: Coco and Roco. Our favourite thing to do as a family is travelling in our caravan visiting new places and making new memories. Another of my favourite things is reading; I love getting lost in a story!

Reading

Please try to read with your child at least four times a week and record your child's reading diary. This can be the school banded book or a book from home. It is important to check that, as well as becoming more fluent, the children understand what they are reading, especially as they begin to read longer and more complex books. This can be done by discussing the book afterwards, or during reading. Talk about the characters, setting or main events. Encourage children to develop empathy by focusing on characters' emotions and motivations.

It is important that your child has their reading record in school every day so that adults within school can also record in them. An adult will collect and record the times read each week. Each class has its own system in place to recognise and reward children who read at home with adults.

We encourage a love for reading and aim for our children to be life-long readers. The children are encouraged to read and enjoy the books in our book area within the school day. Children are welcome to bring their own reading book from home as long as it is of an appropriate level for them to read and enjoy independently.

We also celebrate reading through celebrating star readers each fortnight in our celebration assembly.
